Know More

Last year, Afra Ernst returned to Indonesia after eighteen years. Born in Jakarta, she has lived in the Netherlands since she was six. Afra kept wondering why she and her mother had left. Her intuition proved correct: it was pure necessity—they had no choice. A past that lingers like a shadow, no matter how hard Afra tries to let it go.

Concept

My Wayang and I is a dance performance about how the past can continue to haunt us. About tension that remains trapped in the body, about exclusion and the pain of not being accepted. But also about the power of imagination and the desire to break free from what once was.

Afra combines dance, poetry, and Indonesian visual language in a layered performance. In her choreography, Mauri Kierindoongo, Christiaan Hendriksen, and poet Moze Naél take the audience on a gripping struggle: learning to live with your shadowed past.

My Wayang and I makes you feel that we are stronger than our shadows. And it poses one question to the audience: do you dare to face your shadows?
